Today I crossed into West Virginia. I am finally nearing the end of the longest state on the trail. The AT in Virginia spans roughly 550 miles and I have eight final miles tomorrow walking along the Virginia/West Virginia border. That will take me into West Virginia and Harper’s Ferry National Historical Park, the spiritual halfway point of the trail. I have been looking forward to exploring Harper’s Ferry for a few years now ever since my interest grew to explore all National Park Units within the USA.

Today I also rode the roller coaster. This is not a traditional roller coaster that you get strapped into and the machine does the work for you. It is 14 miles of 13 steep ascents and descents that is made up of rocks and loose dirt that causes you to constantly worry about your balance and keeping your footing. It was tiring to say the least, but a really fun challenge to count each climb down. I got a burst of energy halfway through and trail ran a portion of the trail until I ran out of gas. I still think Three Ridges Mountain, south of Shenandoah NP was more challenging.

I also have now walked 1,000 miles of the trail. It was a really good feeling to know what I have accomplished and that there is still quite a bit to come. While I have only done 265 miles on this stretch, I vividly remember the 750 I previously completed. I’m sure I’ll have lots more memories to make as the trail progresses.

P.S. Strava had a little problem and didn’t count two miles I completed today. Oh well. Seems to be switching between airplane mode and data screw with the gps system.
