Back in March, my mom got extremely lucky by winning the Mt Whitney permit lottery for herself, my dad, and me. So, we made plans to use our July 3rd reservation to climb the tallest point in the lower 48. However, various injuries to all three of us forced us to cancel the trip, and so instead we took the opportunity to visit the Illinois High Point, which is closed year round - apart from the first weekend in June, July, August, and September. So here we are, taking the opportunity to visit Charles Mound within the window it’s open. It was nice, and we met some very experienced high pointers while at the top. Probably will never come back here again, but it was a fun time. State High Point #14 for me.
