For some reason, I didn’t consider off-trail travel an option in the mountains above LA. Something inarticulable about snakes and solitude, maybe? I ran into someone on Telegraph Peak on Memorial Day who said that the route up Sugarloaf was “class 2-3 and fun.” 
I did not find a mile of unrelenting scree very fun. I didn’t do any climbing movements, either. Different strokes, I guess. I still love being out here, though.
